Environmental Health and Safety

Environmental health and safety tandems occupational health and safety intitiatives. When fires and explosions occur at industrial facilities they release toxic gases and vapors into the atmosphere, spill hazardous chemicals into the groundwater or surface water, or seep into the nearby soil and geological formations. Management of these potential incidents requires a comprehensive understanding of the environmental rules and regulations that are designed to protect workers, public, and the environment. Under normal operating conditions environmental health and safety governs the rouitine emissions from chemical operations and process to prevent air pollution concerns and damage to the fragile ecosystem. An example is the footprint of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that may affect climate change. Regulatory requirements play an important role in both the approach and consequences associated with safety system engineering design and maintenance.

Environmental health and safety professionals are concerned with a number of issues including, but not limited to; air emissions and ambient air quality; energy conservation; wasteswater and ambient water quality; water conservation; hazardous waste management and waste management; community noise; contamination of land and subsequent remediation; emergency response capability and mitigation efforts to control release into air, water, and land,; use of raw materials and natural resources; energy emitted into the environment as heat, noise, vibration, and finally conservation of waste and by-products.
