. CERTIFIED SAFETY PROFESSIONAL (CSP)

What is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP)?

A Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a trained specialist with the education and experience required to recognize hazards in the workplace and to implement effective plans for their prevention.

It is important to note that not all safety professionals are certified. Certification is only awarded to individuals who pass two core examinations, hold the required accredited degrees and have three or more years of professional safety experience.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is the organization responsible for ensuring, through examinations, that certified individuals have the required instruction and experience to consult on safety matters. The BCSP also protects employers and the community by requiring all certified professionals to pass recertification programs every five years in order to remain current with changes in safety practice.

Why is important to have a CSP manage your Safety Program?

While safety employees in general may perform similar duties to those performed by certified employees, only a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is guaranteed to have the required background and experience necessary for the job. The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential is a mark that officially distinguishes an individual as a specialist and provides the occupational credibility that employers look for in a safety consultant. Safety issues, over recent years, have become more challenging and they demand qualified professionals who are involved in the maintenance and advancement of their skills and knowledge. Employers who choose to hire a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) communicate their own understanding of the complex industry and ensure their clients that they practice responsible safety protocol.
